Sheriff Christopher Schmaling ordered every Flock camera used by the Racine County Sheriff's Office torn down on September 4, 2026. He said the office would not take part in a system that appears to use public safety as a justification for mass surveillance, and that Flock failed the public. The office said it learned Flock was generating and marketing a separate dataset beyond the 30 day retention period it understood applied to law enforcement use. Schmaling said the department would keep looking at other automated plate reader technology. The City of Racine holds a separate contract, and its Personnel and Finance Committee voted 3 to 2 on September 8, 2026 against terminating that agreement, sending the question to the Common Council for September 15, 2026. Mayor Cory Mason said he did not think the city would move forward with Flock as a vendor next year. No camera count or contract amount for the sheriff's office appears in the coverage reviewed.

Not yet in the sources: the contract amount, the camera count, and the approval date. The city or county clerk holds the approval file, and the records request guide gives the wording to ask for it. If you already hold the document, send it in.
What happens next
This decision already happened in public; the record and its sources are above. If the community revisits the question, that decision would follow the same public process: a noticed meeting, public comment, and a recorded outcome, all through official channels.
