Who approved this?
No source names who approved this contract. That gap is common where a purchase cleared without a council vote.
The Wytheville Police Department stopped using its Flock readers on September 2, 2026 and deactivated all connected department devices. Chief Joel Hash said the readers had helped identify stolen vehicles and resolve cases, but that public trust and constitutional accountability must always take precedence. He tied the timing to nationwide concerns about the technology and to other agencies pausing or ending Flock contracts. The decision came from the department, and no town council vote was reported. Camera count and contract price are missing from the WSLS report and from the Cardinal News roundup. Wytheville sits inside Wythe County, whose sheriff ended a separate Flock contract one day earlier.
Use suspended
Camera use is suspended. The contract itself has not been reported terminated.
Not yet in the sources: the contract amount, the camera count, and the approval date. The city or county clerk holds the approval file, and the records request guide gives the wording to ask for it. If you already hold the document, send it in.
What happens next
Renewals are decided in public. Residents can attend the meeting, speak during public comment, and write to the office above through official channels. The ACLU publishes a model cancellation resolution officials can adapt.
