Who approved this?

Wythe County Sheriff Anthony Cline ended the office's contract with Flock Safety on September 1, 2026. Four cameras were in service at the time. Cline said automated readers raise important and evolving questions about privacy, data collection, information sharing, and the constitutional rights of citizens who have not been accused of a crime. He credited the cameras with investigative value before concluding that the contract should end. The contract price, term length and funding source were not disclosed by the sheriff's office, by WSLS, or in the Cardinal News roundup. No Board of Supervisors vote approving the original contract has been located.
