The Spartan Echo reported on May 6, 2026 that Norfolk State University Police runs 17 Flock Safety cameras at campus entry and exit points. Campus police said the university contracted with Flock Safety in October 2023 and that the cameras went up around the spring of 2024. The report says the system holds data for about 21 days under Virginia law, that the cameras read plates and record vehicle make, model, color and marks such as dents and bumper stickers, and that they do not use facial recognition. Police Chief Brian Covington is quoted. The Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism named Norfolk State among five Virginia campuses with Flock cameras on August 14, 2026. Neither report gives a dollar figure.
