Campbell County Sheriff Whit Clark terminated the office's contract with Flock Safety on September 2, 2026 and discontinued use of the automated license plate readers immediately. Clark said that while technology can be a valuable tool for law enforcement, maintaining the trust and confidence of the community must remain a priority. The office pointed to complaints from residents about privacy and civil liberties as the reason for the decision. Clark said the sheriff's office belongs to the community it serves and has to weigh enforcement value against constitutional rights. WSLS placed the move alongside similar decisions in Wythe, Bland, Charlotte and Henry counties and at the Lynchburg Police Department. None of the sources state how many cameras Campbell County operated, what the contract cost or when it was due to expire.
