Bedford County Sheriff Michael Miller announced on September 3, 2026 that the county's Flock cameras and associated software would be shut down and remain inoperable until further notice. Miller said discrepancies in vehicle counts inside the Flock system prompted the shutdown and that Flock was working to provide an explanation. He said an audit of monthly usage turned up no misuse or abuse by Bedford County Sheriff's Office employees. Miller also said he has always been open and honest, and a proponent of the Flock system and its capabilities to solve crimes and save lives. Residents in neighboring jurisdictions had raised questions about safeguards and potential overreach in the weeks before the decision. The number of cameras, the contract price and the contract term are not stated in any of the sources reviewed.
Use suspended
Camera use is suspended. The contract itself has not been reported terminated.
Not yet in the sources: the contract amount, the camera count, and the approval date. The city or county clerk holds the approval file, and the records request guide gives the wording to ask for it. If you already hold the document, send it in.
