Who approved this?
No approval document for this contract has been found yet. The records request guide shows which office holds it.
Appomattox County Sheriff Robert Richardson suspended the office's Flock Safety contract on the evening of September 2, 2026, roughly an hour before a town hall he had scheduled on the cameras. Richardson said he believes this is the best tool he has seen in 20 years in law enforcement, and that he also believes the data must be handled appropriately to ensure transparency. He said that after reviewing how the data was handled he did not feel confident standing before residents that night and arguing to keep the cameras. Richardson said physical removal would take time and that the cameras would not operate while that is pending. Cardinal News grouped Appomattox with Campbell, Charlotte and Wythe counties and the town of Wytheville, all of which moved away from Flock in the same week. Neither source gives a camera count, a contract price or a contract end date for Appomattox.
Use suspended
Camera use is suspended. The contract itself has not been reported terminated.
Not yet in the sources: the contract amount, the camera count, and the approval date. The city or county clerk holds the approval file, and the records request guide gives the wording to ask for it. If you already hold the document, send it in.
What happens next
Renewals are decided in public. Residents can attend the meeting, speak during public comment, and write to the office above through official channels. The ACLU publishes a model cancellation resolution officials can adapt.
