Amherst County Sheriff Jimmy Ayers announced on September 3, 2026 that the office's 4 Flock cameras and the associated software would be shut down and remain inoperable until further notice. Ayers said the decision followed an internal audit of his office's use of the system and conversations with sheriffs in neighboring counties. WSET reported that Amherst and Bedford both pointed to discrepancies they wanted Flock to explain before any restart. The announcement landed in the same week that Bedford County and the Lynchburg Police Department also stepped back from the technology. No contract price, term length or expiration date appears in either source, and the sheriff's office did not say whether or when the 4 cameras would be physically removed.

Use suspended

Camera use is suspended. The contract itself has not been reported terminated.
