The Alexandria Police Department operates 61 Flock Safety license plate cameras and purges the data after 21 days, the ceiling set by Virginia law. The Alexandria Brief reported the department will not publish camera locations, citing operational and investigative considerations, and has made no decision to shorten retention after Flock cut its recommended default from 30 days to 7 on August 15, 2026. On August 18, 2026 the city published a sharing list naming 161 Virginia agencies with search access, among them 59 sheriff offices, the State Police, the Department of Corrections, the Department of Wildlife Resources and campus police at 7 universities, with no federal or out of state agencies listed. Mayor Alyia Gaskins asked on August 16, 2026 for the sharing partners to be published and for more transparency. Police Chief Tarrick McGuire signed Directive 10.40, which requires monthly internal audits. The Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism reported on August 14, 2026 that Alexandria had 67 Flock cameras; the 61 figure is used because the Alexandria Brief ties it specifically to the police department. The Alexandria Sheriff's Office separately runs 2 Flock cameras at the adult detention center, purges after 21 days and audits at least monthly on a sample of no less than 5 percent of queries. No council vote, contract amount or term length appears in any source reviewed, and City Council was set to receive a program update on September 10, 2026.
