Wylie City Council voted 7 to 0 in late August 2026 against renewing the city's Flock Safety contract, and the 6 license plate reader cameras are due to come down around the October 31, 2026 expiration. The cameras went up in August 2024 and cost about $27,000 a year. Mayor Matthew Porter said the protections are just not there and are not required in the terms of the existing contract, and raised concerns about how the data is kept and shared. Assistant Police Chief Tommy Walters pointed to crimes solved with the system, including a 2026 murder investigation. Resident Austin Gregory organized a campaign that gathered more than 700 petition signatures. The council also voted to hold a workshop on any future Flock agreement if the safeguards change. Sources give the vote date as August 25, 26 and 27, 2026, so no single day is given, and none records the original council approval date or vote.
