Governor Greg Abbott directed Texas state agencies to stop spending state money on Flock cameras, reported by the Texas Tribune on August 28, 2026 as an order given the night before. A spokesman said that to the extent funding comes from Texas agencies, those agencies are clarifying that the funds cannot be used for Flock cameras. The Department of Public Safety holds a three year contract worth 15.9 million dollars, funded through the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority, to install roughly 1,200 Flock cameras. KVIA reported the authority has put at least 30 million dollars into the Texas Flock network since 2023, paying for more than 3,200 cameras at state and local agencies. Abbott acted after a Lufkin police officer was charged with 100 counts of misusing public information for allegedly using city Flock cameras to watch 11 people for more than a year. At least 6 Texas police departments and sheriff offices reported officers placed on leave, investigated or criminally charged in the month before the order. The amount shown is the whole term figure the reporting prints for the 3 year contract, and no camera count is given because both sources describe it as approximate. Status is recorded as Suspended because the order blocks state spending while neither source shows the contract was canceled.
