Who approved this?
Approved by Leander City Council.
Leander City Council directed staff on September 3, 2026 to suspend use of the city Flock Safety system and told the police department to stop operating the cameras, Community Impact reported on September 4, 2026. The city Flock FAQ page describes 15 fixed cameras and an annual cost of about 45,000 dollars, with the first year covered by a federal grant and later years covered by the police department general fund. Community Impact put the total at 29 cameras and said 15 were authorized under a May 2025 license agreement with 14 installed in summer 2025. The 2 counts differ; the count of 15 is used because it comes from the operating agency's own page. Community Impact reported the federal money was a Community Oriented Policing Services Technology and Equipment grant of 236,000 dollars, of which 50,000 dollars was set aside for cameras. The city page states that data is encrypted and deleted after 30 days, that every search is logged and tied to a case number, and that a supervisor must approve access before a search runs. Council members Stephen Chang and Andrew Naudin took part in the discussion and Police Chief Greg Minton presented. No vote tally, contract end date or formal termination date is documented in either source.
