Who approved this?
Approved by City Council.
League City Council voted 6-1 on August 11, 2026 to call a special election placing a non-binding Flock question on the November 3, 2026 ballot. The ballot asks, as a non-binding statement of voter preference, whether the police department should continue using automated license plate reader cameras at fixed locations on public roadways for law enforcement purposes. Council member Chad Tressler cast the lone no vote and council member Andy Mann was absent. The department runs 55 Flock cameras with another 16 in the Texas Department of Transportation permitting process, and KPRC reports a five-year agreement valued at nearly $900,000 covering 70 cameras, approved in December 2023. Initial funding came through the fiscal 2023 budget for 42 cameras. Vehicle images and location data are generally held 30 days before automatic deletion, with evidence-related material kept longer. League City shares reader data with 436 Texas law enforcement agencies and the FBI, and does not share directly with ICE, Border Patrol, businesses or homeowners associations. The result is advisory and the council keeps final authority, though Mayor Nick Long said he views the outcome as binding in practical terms. FOX 26 describes the vote as unanimous while 3 other outlets report 6-1; the 6-1 tally is used because those accounts also name the dissenting member.
