The ACU Police Department installed 4 Flock Safety automated license plate readers at intersections around the Abilene Christian University campus over the summer of 2026. Chief Jason Ellis told the student paper The Optimist that the cameras record plates, vehicle descriptions and location, and he said there is no facial recognition and no picture of the inside of a car. Plate data is deleted after 30 days while search logs are kept permanently. Search access is held by supervisors and one detective, and every query needs a case number and leaves an audit trail. KACU, the public radio station licensed to the university, reported on September 17, 2026 that officers had run only 3 searches in about 6 weeks, 2 for hit and run cases and 1 for a missing child, and that federal agencies are excluded from the national and statewide search networks. Neither report gives a dollar figure, a term length or a board action.
