The Oconee County Sheriff's Office runs 5 Flock cameras and pays about 3,000 dollars per camera each year, which FITSNews described on August 27, 2026 as an annual contract cost near 15,000 dollars. Oconee County Council passed first reading of a Protection from Mass Surveillance ordinance on August 18, 2026 by a vote of 4 to 1, with Councilman John Elliott casting the only vote against it. The ordinance would bar county money and county property, including roads, from being used for Flock and similar mass surveillance systems. At an emergency meeting on August 26, 2026 council directed the county attorney to demand that Flock preserve organizational and network audit logs, data sharing histories, user permissions, hot list records and retention timelines, and told the sheriff to export the records and confirm completion within three business days. Second reading was set for September 1, 2026 and the final reading with a public hearing for September 15, 2026. The sheriff's office reports 250 to 300 searches a month, keeps 30 days of data, and has captains audit personnel searches monthly. Sheriff Mike Crenshaw asked Attorney General Alan Wilson for guidance before releasing unredacted logs that contain plate numbers, vehicle descriptions, suspected crimes and case numbers. No purchase order, contract term, end date or funding source for the sheriff's cameras has been located.
