The City of Greer suspended its Flock Safety automated license plate reader system on August 21, 2026 under a 90 day moratorium. City Administrator Andy Merriman explained the moratorium to City Council at its August 25, 2026 meeting and said the review will cover internal policies, procedures and training along with resident privacy concerns and how the data is handled. The Greenville Journal reported the city operates 10 automated license plate reader cameras. Staff access was cut off and the cameras were physically covered when the suspension took effect. FITSNews reported that two Greer officers, Cpl. Kareem Lynch and Officer Sebastian Echeverry, were fired in late June 2026 and lost their state law enforcement certifications over misuse of Flock to track private individuals. Council members said they want a workshop on the system before the 90 days expire. The sources note Flock cut its default data retention from 30 days to 7 days but give no contract amount, no term length, no original approval date and no audit requirement. This is Greer in Greenville and Spartanburg counties, South Carolina.
