San Jose, CA Flock Contract

Active

Who approved this?

Approved by San Jose City Council.

The city runs a network of about 474 Flock license plate reader cameras; civil liberties groups sued over it in late 2025. On March 10, 2026, the council voted unanimously to keep the network while cutting data retention from 1 year to 30 days, restricting camera placement, and tightening outside-agency access. About 100 residents spoke at the meeting. Police Chief Paul Joseph told the council the cameras helped solve murders, kidnappings, and sexual assaults. The contract runs until June 2026. The agency’s transparency portal reported 477 cameras and 30-day retention as of July 24, 2026.
