Narragansett, RI Flock Contract

Canceled

Who approved this?

Approved by Town Council.

The Narragansett Town Council voted at its August 3, 2026 meeting to terminate the town's Flock contract immediately, and the chair announced the voice vote as 5-0. The contract cost $12,600 in the first year and $12,000 in each year after, paid entirely from forfeiture funds rather than tax dollars, and it ran to September 2027 with automatic renewal. The town first authorized the program in September 2024, and a former councilmember said that authorization was for a one-year pilot with a guarantee that continuation would return to the council, which did not happen before a further two-year contract was issued. Four cameras were installed on Boston Road, Point Judith Road, Woodruff Avenue and near the Dillon Rotary, and one was stolen, leaving three working. Council President Alexander Menzies put early termination at roughly $12,600 for the final contract year plus any additional fee, and the town solicitor had not finished the financial review when the vote happened. Councilor Jason Colonies joined Menzies in placing the item on the agenda. The police chief opposed immediate cancellation and asked for a two-week delay. Objections centered on data sharing with other agencies and the 30-day retention period.
