Who approved this?
Approved 6-0 by Oxford City Council.
Oxford City Council voted 6 to 1 on August 18, 2026 to terminate the police department's Flock Safety contract, after a 5 to 2 vote to amend the measure so it said terminate instead of maintain. Bill Snavely, Jim Vinch, Jason Bracken and Mayor Mike Smith voted to end the program, and Vice Mayor Alex French voted no while citing cases the cameras helped solve. Council had earlier approved the Flock agreement unanimously at a February 6 meeting, at $219,000 over five years for 14 cameras, 13 along high traffic roads near the city borders and one uptown near parks. Oxford had already paid $48,000 for the current year and the contract ran to February 2027. Police Chief John Jones answered council questions at the August meeting. Residents objected that Flock is a private for profit company, with one saying the practice makes residents pre-criminals. The sources give no roll call for the original unanimous approval and do not confirm its year.
