Rejected
Who approved this?
Voted down by Norton City Council.
Norton City Council rejected this proposal, so the $80,000 for 15 cameras is a price the city never paid. News 5 Cleveland reported on March 22, 2023 that council voted no on the 15 camera, $80,000 plan in June 2022. The same report covered a second rejection in March 2023 of a smaller plan for 4 cameras on Barber Road that the Fred Martin Superstore offered to fund at $22,000 over two years. The Akron Beacon Journal recorded that second tally at 5 to 2, with DeHarpart, Tousley, Whipkey, Lukens and Bates opposed and Pelot and Kernan in favor. Councilwoman Charlotte Whipkey said she did not have faith that the cameras would not be abused, and Councilman DeHarpart cited constituent opposition. Akron.com reported on November 7, 2024 that Police Chief Brett McShane brought back a plan for 10 cameras at $33,250 in year one and $63,250 over two years, and that council advanced it to a first reading on November 4, 2024. The outcome of that 2024 ordinance is not documented in the sources read here. No roll call is listed because these were rejection votes.
