Voted down by Ironton City Council.
Ironton City Council passed an ordinance by a vote of 4 to 3 barring city agencies from acquiring, contracting for, using or subscribing to automated license plate reader services inside the city, the Ironton Tribune reported on August 31, 2026. Sarah Simmons, Jacob Hock, Troy Scott and Chris Haney voted for the measure and Robby Brown, Nate Kline and Craig Harvey voted against it. Scott, who introduced the ordinance, said it protects residents from large technology surveillance firms and from government overreach. The Herald-Dispatch reported on August 14, 2026 that the ordinance cleared a second reading and was set for a third and final reading on August 27, and that Flock Safety is named in it as an example of a prohibited system. The ordinance carves out vehicle mounted readers used by law enforcement, emergency use in kidnapping and missing person cases, and dash, body and security cameras that do not read plates. Council asked for clarification on whether the measure would reach Lawrence County Sheriff Office operations before final passage. No Flock Safety contract, camera count or dollar amount for Ironton is documented in either report, and the ban is written to cover all license plate reader vendors rather than one company. This is Ironton in Lawrence County, Ohio.
