Approved by Pitt County Board of Education on April 13, 2026.
The Pitt County Board of Education voted on April 13, 2026 to let the Pitt County Sheriff's Office place 2 Flock Safety license plate reader cameras at school sites. One goes at Wellcome Middle School facing U.S. Highway 11 and North Memorial Drive, the other at Chicod School facing N.C. Highway 43 South. WCTI reported the vote was unanimous and came with no discussion. The Daily Reflector reported the district pays nothing, because the sheriff's office supplies and runs the cameras from its own annual budget, and that these are the first public school locations for Flock devices in the county. The sheriff's office had 28 fixed cameras and 2 mobile units elsewhere in Pitt County at the time, installed since November 2025, and put equipment and service costs above 200,000 dollars over 2 years for that countywide program. Plate data is held 30 days unless downloaded for an investigation. John Jenkins is the security coordinator for Pitt County Schools. School officials said the cameras face public roads and not school grounds or students. The reports do not give a vote tally by name and do not give a dollar figure for the 2 school cameras.
