Macon County commissioners voted 5-0 in mid-July 2026 to defund the sheriff's office Flock contract, and voted unanimously again to have the cameras removed. WLOS reports the contract was budgeted at $47,000 a year from the county budget and was set to end in October 2026. The sheriff's office ran 12 county-owned Flock cameras; four more on Macon County school property were left out of the removal order, and commissioners asked that those be moved to school property only. Commissioner John Shearl made the motion to defund, Commissioner Barry Breeden seconded the removal motion, and Josh Young chaired the board. Sheriff Brent Holbrooks supported keeping the cameras and Chief Deputy Derek Jones spoke for the department. Smoky Mountain News reports the system logged 1 million to 3 million license plates a month, and that all Flock data is purged 30 days after recording and held in law enforcement custody. Under North Carolina law the data is confidential and may be disclosed only to authorized individuals for legitimate law enforcement purposes. Smoky Mountain News dates the vote July 15, 2026 and WLOS dates it July 16, 2026, so only the week is given.
