Catawba police ran 5 Flock Safety cameras through a 60 day trial before asking the town council to make the arrangement permanent. The council declined at its September 8, 2026 meeting and the cameras are being taken down. Police Chief Brian Bixby backed keeping the system and cited limited funding and competing local needs as the reason it did not survive. WSOC reported the permanent installation would have run about $15,000, and WHKY reported the council also turned down a reduced offer of roughly $3,000 for a single camera. No contract amount is recorded here because the town never entered a paid agreement. Town Manager Danny Hipps described the trial as a chance to see how the equipment would work for Catawba before committing. Officials said the question could come back in a future budget year.
