The university cut off national access in early August 2026 and limited searches to the State Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement agencies in Watauga County, citing nationwide privacy concerns after a summer 2026 review. Anna Oakes, senior director of public relations, spoke for the university. The Appalachian State University Police Department links a Flock transparency portal from its own home page.
