Lansing, MI Flock Contract

Active

Who approved this?

No source names who approved this contract yet. Contracts that arrive through procurement or a purchasing threshold often leave no vote to record.

Lansing City Council adopted a resolution 7 to 1 on August 25, 2026 asking Mayor Andy Schor and the Lansing Police Department to end existing contracts with Flock Safety. Council President Peter Spadafore cast the only no vote. First Ward Councilmember Ryan Kost introduced the measure and said the cameras work at the tail end, after the crime has happened. The measure is non-binding and does not by itself terminate any agreement, so the status remains Active. It also asks the city to avoid similar vendors until a privacy impact assessment is finished and further privacy guardrails are in place. The department runs 26 Flock cameras at 7 locations chosen by traffic and crime patterns, holds data 30 days before deletion, and logged 7 to 90 searches a day over the prior month. Police Chief Rob Backus opposed the resolution. Neither source states the contract amount, the funding source, the contract end date or how the contracts were first approved.
