Who approved this?
Approved by Jackson City Council.
The Jackson City Council approved a one year agreement with Flock Safety for 10 automated license plate reader cameras, according to Fox 47 News, which covers the Jackson and Hillsdale area of Michigan. The reported price was 2,500 dollars per camera per year, or 25,000 dollars for the 10 cameras. Police Chief Elmer Hitt said the department would pay with a grant it receives yearly from the U.S. Department of Justice and would evaluate the program at the end of the first year before deciding whether to continue. Fox 47 places the council action in March but does not print the year, so no approval date is given. Flock told the station that data would be deleted every 30 days on a rolling basis. WILX reported on August 24, 2026 that Jackson still runs the cameras under Police Chief Chris Simpson and that the retention window had dropped from the 30 day standard to one week. No vote tally, roll call or signed order form was located, and the city agenda portal blocked automated access.
