The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office runs a Flock Safety license plate reader network that 9 and 10 News counted at 28 cameras in a report dated June 11, 2026, and that UpNorthLive counted again at 28 on July 7, 2026. Northern Express put the figure at 27 and placed the cameras in Garfield, East Bay and Peninsula townships, and reported that individual townships sign their own agreements with Flock. The 28 count is used because 2 later reports agree on it and the 27 count appears only once. Captain Clark told UpNorthLive that footage is deleted after 30 days and used only as an investigative resource. Interlochen Public Radio reported on July 24, 2026 that more than 1,400 agencies nationwide can search Grand Traverse County Flock data, that the office policy manual calls for audits twice a year by the detective captain, and that the captain reports to Sheriff Michael Shea. Interlochen also reported nearly 450,000 vehicles photographed in a 30 day window and 90 people arrested on warrants and other charges. Undersheriff Randy Fewless said the cameras photograph the back of passing vehicles and cannot be used to watch live. No contract amount is given because the payments sit with the individual townships rather than the county, and no county board approval date or vote was found in the county agenda archive.
