Auburn police installed 7 Flock Safety cameras in the summer of 2025 under a federal grant that Maine Public traced to Homeland Security. Police Chief Jason Moen asked the City Council in March 2026 to pay for a second year. The council left the cameras out of the fiscal 2027 budget, and Auburn began pulling them down in August 2026. Maine Public reported in June 2026 that councilors had voted in March to advance camera funding, which conflicts with later Sun Journal, Maine Morning Star and WABI reporting that no money was appropriated; the no funding outcome is used because 3 outlets tie it to the adopted budget and to the removal. State legislators Quentin Chapman, David Boyer and Laurel Libby organized a citizen initiative to ban the cameras outright. The petition gathered more than 1,800 signatures against a threshold of 1,568, and the Auburn city clerk certified it on August 19, 2026, sending it to the City Council and toward a possible November ballot question. No contract amount, term length, or retention policy for Auburn has been published. This is Auburn in Androscoggin County, Maine.
