Madison installed Flock license plate readers in 2022, and Police Chief Justin Meyer calls them an invaluable tool that cleared retail thefts the department could not have solved before. The 28 cameras detected more than 35,000 vehicles in a recent month per the department’s portal. Dakota News Now reported on May 2, 2022 that the department had partnered with Flock Safety and would install readers around the city. No approving body, date, cost, contract term or funding source appears in any readable document. The City of Madison posts no commission agendas or minutes in a readable form, directing the public to its YouTube channel instead, so no minutes could be checked.
