Watertown City Manager George Proakis announced on January 27, 2026 that the city is cancelling its contract with Flock Safety, and Watertown News reported it on January 28, 2026. Eight cameras had been planned and none of them had been installed. Watertown News reported on December 11, 2025 that Proakis had signed the contract in September 2025 and that City Council President Mark Sideris asked to see the policy and wanted a public discussion through a council subcommittee before the cameras went live. Proakis said he would work with the Procurement Office on the steps to extract the city from the contract. The January 28 report gave privacy objections, ACLU concerns and federal data sharing as the reasons behind the reversal. No document reviewed gives the contract amount, the term length, the funding source, the retention period or a City Council vote approving the agreement.
