Who approved this?
No source names who approved this contract. That gap is common where a purchase cleared without a council vote.
Bellingham police let their Flock Safety contract run out on September 4, 2026 rather than renew it. Chief Kenneth Fitzgerald cited the company's pricing and transparency, and said Flock tried to change the terms while the agreement was still in force. He also pointed to Flock's FreeForm feature, which allows plain language searches of the database, and said those features go beyond what most people would think of as a traditional license plate reader. WHDH reported on August 27, 2026 that the department will evaluate other public safety technology. The number of cameras and the annual price are not stated in any of the published reports, and no record of a town vote approving the original contract has surfaced.

What happens next
This decision already happened in public; the record and its sources are above. If the community revisits the question, that decision would follow the same public process: a noticed meeting, public comment, and a recorded outcome, all through official channels.
