The Barnstable Town Council voted 7 to 3 on September 3, 2026 to end the Flock contract and take the cameras down, over objections from the police department. Barnstable ran 4 readers, on Route 28 near Santuit and Newtown Road, Route 28 near Strawberry Hill Road, Main Street in Hyannis, and Yarmouth Road near the former Exit 7. Detective Sgt. Kevin Connolly said the system logged about 2.2 million plate reads a month on a 30 day retention window, and that federal sharing, nationwide search and immigration related queries had already been turned off. Police Chief Jean Challies and Detective Lt. Joseph Green described restricted access, routine audits and a bar on outside agencies querying Barnstable footage directly. Council President Craig Tamash, a retired Barnstable deputy police chief, voted to keep the program. WCAI reported on August 20, 2026 that some councilors first learned of the cameras from news coverage, and no council vote approving the original contract has been located.
