The Ayer Select Board voted 3 to 0 on August 31, 2026 to cancel the town's contract with Flock Safety immediately. Ayer News reported that the board member who made the motion said the cameras should be disabled and uninstalled immediately. The board had announced on August 18, 2026 that it would take the vote, residents gathered at Town Hall for it, and 7 residents spoke. Ayer News reported that the police department had received a $25,000 grant to fund the Flock technology and that the department had planned to connect data only with other Massachusetts law enforcement agencies. Residents raised the Massachusetts case Commonwealth v. McCarthy and the wording of the contract during the discussion. Neither report names the individual Select Board members, the grant program, the contract amount, the number of cameras or the contract term.
