The Current reported on September 2, 2026 that the Lafayette Police Department operates 73 Flock Safety cameras and holds plate data for 30 days, stretching to 60 months when a record is attached to an investigation. That report counted 189,465 unique plate reads across Lafayette systems over the prior 30 days and put another 50 Flock cameras with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette police. Lafayette police told The Current that officers must enter a justification for each search and that every action is subject to internal audit, and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office gave the same 30 day figure through Staff Sgt. Chris Cormier. The Advocate reported on February 10, 2026 that the department confirmed it owns Flock readers but did not provide details of a contract or associated costs. No Lafayette City Council or Lafayette City-Parish Council vote, ordinance or purchase order authorizing the cameras was located. Contract amount, term length, renewal date and funding source are all missing from the public record.
