Michigan City police run 60 Flock Safety cameras, up from the 30 they started with, and the department also uses Flock Raven gunshot detection. The police department asked the Common Council for 300,000 dollars from the city rainy day fund to expand the system. The council tabled that ordinance indefinitely on July 21, 2026 after residents objected to what they called blanket surveillance, and Councilman Donald Przybylinski said he would not decide until he heard more from the public. Police Chief Steven Forker returned with a narrower plan built around pan tilt zoom cameras downtown, a drone, and a mobile Flock trailer with solar power and 360 degree cameras for downtown events. As of August 18, 2026 the ordinance sat in the first of 3 required readings. Flock also moved its retention guidance toward 7 days instead of 30. No document located here records a vote approving the existing 60 camera contract, its price or its term, so no roll call is given.
