No source names who approved this contract. That gap is common where a purchase cleared without a council vote.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported on September 17, 2026 that Southern Illinois University Carbondale is one of 5 Illinois public universities using Flock Safety cameras, based on public records requests, and that the 5 together spent more than 450,000 dollars on Flock services since 2021. The report does not break the spending out by campus and gives no camera count for Carbondale. The campus police agency is the SIU Department of Public Safety, led by Chief Benjamin Newman, whose police division is named SIU Police. The department site does not mention plate readers.
