Harvey police said in August 2026 that the city had built out a Flock Safety network combining automated license plate readers, pan tilt zoom video cameras, gunshot detection and a semi autonomous drone feeding a real time crime center. Officials said Harvey is the first city in Illinois to receive a Flock Safe City designation and that it installed nearly every product the company sells. Police declined to say how many cameras are up in a city of about 20,000 residents. Officials said grants paid for the system and did not identify the grant program. Police Chief Dale Mitchell said the department will use the technology in a legal, ethical and moral way, and the department said live video and plate reader data are held 30 days unless tied to an open investigation. No city council agenda item, ordinance, contract or roll call for the purchase could be located, because the city does not publish an accessible agenda archive.
