The Cortland town board voted unanimously on August 24, 2026 to terminate the police department's Flock Safety contract, which the town entered in 2024. Five license plate reader cameras were covered. Mayor Mark Pietrowski said residents raised concerns about liberty and freedom and being able to move around town without fear of being tracked, and pointed to documented misuse by officers in other agencies. The decision followed a mid July 2026 conference call with Flock representatives about privacy complaints and reported data breaches elsewhere. At the same meeting the board approved a 60 month, $120,871 agreement with Axon Enterprise for body worn and in car cameras, at about $21,000 a year, replacing Versaterm. Pietrowski said on September 2, 2026 that reaction to the termination had been positive. Neither source gives the Flock contract amount, the funding source, the term length or the original approval vote.
