Jerome County Sheriff Gary Taylor canceled the office's Flock Safety contract in early September 2026 and told county commissioners the $24,000 a year would go toward deputy salaries and possible raises. The office ran 8 Flock cameras. Taylor cited public perception of the technology, budget priorities and past misuse inside the agency, noting that former Sheriff George Oppedyke ran thousands of illegal searches before resigning in 2025. Commissioner Charlie Howell said there was no organized public opposition in Jerome County, unlike neighboring jurisdictions. Taylor called Idaho's criminal code on reader misuse very vague and asked lawmakers for stronger penalties. Commissioners supported redirecting the money to employee salaries. Neither source records the contract end date, the term length, the funding source or any commissioner vote on the original agreement.
