Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood shut down license plate readers countywide effective immediately in a statement posted on August 31, 2026. He said recent orders and statements from the governor and the Department of Transportation made clear that the readers are no longer workable in Florida. Chitwood said every one of his agency's cameras sits on a state road, which left nothing to keep running once the Florida Department of Transportation revoked rights of way approvals. Chitwood credited the readers with helping solve violent crimes and locate missing people, and said he hopes state lawmakers set rules for the technology. The statement gives no camera count, no contract price and no funding source.
