Suspended
Who approved this?
No source names who approved this contract. That gap is common where a purchase cleared without a council vote.
Sheriff Pat Breeden suspended the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Flock Safety camera system in July 2026, more than a month before the state acted. The suspension followed accusations that a former detective had used Flock and other law enforcement databases to look into a personal matter. The Citrus County Chronicle reported that Breeden is holding the suspension in place while the office audits the system and reviews who can reach the data. News 6 confirmed the July suspension and the misuse finding in its September 1, 2026 roundup of Central Florida agencies that had paused their networks. The Florida Department of Transportation memo signed by chief operating officer Will Watts on August 31, 2026 revoked state right of way permits statewide and set a 30 day removal window, so any Sumter cameras on state roads fall under that order as well. No camera count, contract amount, term length, funding source or approving body has been published. No retention period or reporting requirement appears in either source. This is Sumter County, Florida, not Sumter County, Georgia or South Carolina.
Use suspended
Camera use is suspended. The contract itself has not been reported terminated.
Not yet in the sources: the contract amount, the camera count, and the approval date. The city or county clerk holds the approval file, and the records request guide gives the wording to ask for it. If you already hold the document, send it in.
What happens next
Renewals are decided in public. Residents can attend the meeting, speak during public comment, and write to the office above through official channels. The ACLU publishes a model cancellation resolution officials can adapt.
