Sheriff Chris Blackmon suspended the Osceola County Sheriff's Office automated license plate reader network on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, switching off more than 100 cameras. Blackmon told News 6 the county cannot become a police state or a surveillance state searching for its own residents, and told the Osceola News Gazette the readers are a very valuable tool that needs checks and balances. The Osceola News Gazette reported 21 readers inside Kissimmee city limits and 36 inside St. Cloud city limits, with the heaviest concentrations along U.S. Highway 192 and John Young Parkway. The agencies paused operations while the state works out standards for lawful use. The trigger was the Florida Department of Transportation memo signed by chief operating officer Will Watts on August 31, 2026, which revoked permits for readers in state highway rights of way and gave agencies 30 days to remove them. The camera figure recorded here is the more than 100 units the sheriff turned off; no contract amount, term length, funding source, approving body or vote has been published. No retention period, audit schedule or sharing limit appears in either source, and neither documents a contract termination.
