Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said all agency cameras on FDOT infrastructure would be taken offline by the end of the day on September 1, 2026 and that the automated license plate reader program was suspended in its entirety. Local 10 reported that statement on September 1, 2026, and the Miami Herald reported the same suspension the following day. The trigger was FDOT Engineering and Operations Memorandum 26-01, signed by chief operating officer and assistant secretary Will Watts on August 31, 2026, revoking general use permits for readers on the State Highway System and setting a 30 day removal window. The memo cites the increase in deployments along state roadways together with reports of misuse, data privacy concerns and surveillance schemes. Miami-Dade went further than most Florida agencies by pausing the whole program rather than only the state road cameras. Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said he would bring legislation to take back control of city roads from the state, and Coral Gables Commissioner Melissa Castro objected that more than 90,000 vehicles a day use U.S. 1. The sources give no camera count, contract amount or term length for the county.
