The Indian River County Sheriff's Office runs 122 Flock Safety license plate reader cameras, of which 52 sit on state highways and are coming down under the Florida Department of Transportation order. That order is the memo signed by chief operating officer Will Watts on August 31, 2026, which revoked permits for readers in State Highway System rights of way and gave agencies 30 days to remove the equipment. Lt. Kevin Jaworski told Vero News the agency will comply, and the sheriff's cameras include units at Interstate 95 in Fellsmere and two inside Vero Beach city limits. Sheriff Eric Flowers has defended the system publicly, telling CBS12 that it put a murder suspect behind bars. The two sources disagree on retention: Vero News reported a 10 day hold following operational changes Flock made on August 13, while CBS12 described a company wide cut from 30 days to 7 days; both figures are recorded here rather than reconciled, because neither source cites the Indian River contract itself. No contract amount, term length, approving body, vote or funding source has been published for the sheriff's office deployment. No audit schedule or outside agency sharing limit appears in either source.
