FDOT Engineering and Operations Memorandum 26-01, signed by chief operating officer and assistant secretary Will Watts on August 31, 2026, revoked general use permits for automated license plate readers on the State Highway System and set a 30 day removal window ending September 30, 2026. Axios Tampa Bay reported on September 1, 2026 that the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office would comply with the state order and had no broader changes planned for the rest of its network. WUSF reported on September 2, 2026 that the office was aware of the memorandum but would not say how many cameras it operates, citing a Florida public records exemption. That refusal is why no camera count is given. The memo cites the increase in deployments along state roadways along with reports of misuse, data privacy concerns and surveillance schemes. No contract amount, term length or county commission vote appears in the sources reviewed. Status is recorded as Suspended because the state road cameras come down while the agency keeps the rest of its readers and no source shows a contract ending.
Use suspended
Camera use is suspended. The contract itself has not been reported terminated.
Not yet in the sources: the contract amount and the camera count. Florida Department of Transportation holds the approval file, and the records request guide gives the wording to ask for it. If you already hold the document, send it in.
What happens next
Renewals are decided in public. Residents can attend the meeting, speak during public comment, and write to the office above through official channels. The ACLU publishes a model cancellation resolution officials can adapt.
