Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook announced on August 31, 2026 that her office would remove every license plate reader from Clay County roadways. Cook said the decision does not hinder efforts to prevent and fight crime, solve cases, hold offenders accountable and maintain public trust. Her office cited three cases from the prior year: a missing 76 year old woman from South Carolina found in Middleburg, a homicide suspect identified in a stabbing, and a 10 year old recovered in a custody interference case near the Florida and Alabama line that led to three arrests. The move followed the Florida Department of Transportation order revoking approvals for cameras in state road rights of way. No document reviewed gives the Clay County camera count, the contract price or the funding source.
