No source names who approved this contract yet. Contracts that arrive through procurement or a purchasing threshold often leave no vote to record.
Sheriff Gordon Smith ordered the Bradford County Sheriff's Office to stop using license plate reader cameras across the entire county, on and off state roads. Smith said he owes it to his constituents to protect their privacy concerns alongside his public safety duties. The Ocala Gazette reported the same countywide shutdown, listing Bradford among the North Central Florida agencies going further than the state order required. The Florida Department of Transportation memo signed by chief operating officer Will Watts on August 31, 2026 revoked permits for readers on the State Highway System and gave agencies 30 days to remove them, which is what prompted the decision. Neither source gives a camera count, a contract amount, a term length, a funding source or an approving body. No source documents a formal contract termination, a retention period or an audit condition, so the status is Suspended rather than Canceled.
Use suspended
Camera use is suspended. The contract itself has not been reported terminated.
Not yet in the sources: the contract amount, the camera count, and the approval date. The city or county clerk holds the approval file, and the records request guide gives the wording to ask for it. If you already hold the document, send it in.
What happens next
Renewals are decided in public. Residents can attend the meeting, speak during public comment, and write to the office above through official channels. The ACLU publishes a model cancellation resolution officials can adapt.
