Will Watts, chief operating officer and assistant secretary at the Florida Department of Transportation, signed a memorandum on August 31, 2026 revoking every state road plate reader permit and setting a 30 day removal window. Altamonte Springs police announced late that night that they were suspending the camera network at once. The department said it had used the technology for more than a decade and called it a tool that saves lives, protects property and helps catch offenders. It also said it understood the value of public trust and was acting on concerns about privacy, data retention, information sharing and safeguards against unauthorized access. Government Technology and Central Florida Public Media both recorded the announcement as part of a wave across Seminole County that also took in the sheriff office and Winter Springs. No contract amount, camera count or approval record for the Altamonte Springs agreement appears in any document reviewed. The contract itself has not been reported as terminated.
