Wilmington is decommissioning the four Flock Safety license plate cameras placed in the city. The cameras were donated by a nonprofit, and the city does not have a contract with Flock Safety. Daniel Walker, deputy chief of staff to Mayor John Carney, said the city is removing the devices and that Wilmington does not participate in immigration enforcement. A City Council press release dated August 5, 2026 said the decision was made in part because of the ongoing public discussion surrounding the technology. Councilwoman Yolanda McCoy urged residents to stay informed, and Council President Ernest Congo II is named on the release. No council vote, dollar figure, contract term or completion date for the removal appears in either document.
